Ron Wheeldon is a specialist Intellectual Property lawyer well known in South Africa and internationally. He currently manages international trade mark portfolios for a number of multi-national companies and is responsible for the early identification of potential threats to the health of several global brands. At the same time he is active in advising on the availability of various types of IP in South Africa and in Africa generally, the filing and prosecution of applications for registration of rights and is conducting High Court litigation on a number of issues. Where the type of case warrants it, he argues matters himself in the High Court.
Ron has been active in IP in South Africa since 1982. He qualified in law at the University of Rhodesia (as it then was) in 1976 with a Bachelor of Law (Hons.) degree and moved to South Africa after a five year military career, during which he acquired and operated a game farm. He joined a well known Pretoria firm which specialises in IP as an articled clerk in 1982 and moved to a large Johannesburg firm in 1992, where he was a partner for 13 years. He established his present small firm at the beginning of 2006. In 2001 he won the Butterworths prize for the best article appearing in De Rebus in 2000.
A well known aviator and lesser known writer on a range of subjects outside law, as well as an award winning photographer, Ron likes to believe that he brings to IP law a broad world view which makes him alive to the practical aspects of business and its needs from IP law. Recently appointed to the chairmanship of the dilution sub-committee (for Africa and the Middle East) of the International Trade Mark Association (INTA), Ron also serves on the Standing Advisory Committee on IP law in South Africa which reports to the Minister of Trade and Industry.
Ron is assited by Carla Stein, who specialises in corporate law. Carla qualified from WITS with a BA LLB H.Dip Co. Law. Prior to her joing the firm, Carla worked at Weber Wentzel & Bowens.
